Pediatric Dentistry

At Sloan Family Dentistry, we believe that a child’s dental visits should be the foundation for a lifetime of health — not something to dread. Our approach with young patients is gentle, unhurried, and focused on building trust so that the dental office becomes a comfortable, familiar place from an early age.

Growth & Development — The Big Picture

Beyond simply checking for cavities, one of our most important roles in treating children is monitoring the growth and development of their teeth, jaws, and airway. The patterns established in childhood have lifelong consequences — for their dental health, their facial development, and their overall wellbeing. Early intervention, when needed, is almost always simpler and more effective than addressing problems later.

Sleep-Disordered Breathing in Children

One of the most important — and often overlooked — things we watch for in our youngest patients is signs of sleep-disordered breathing. Children should not habitually snore or grind their teeth. When these patterns appear outside of temporary illness, they are often signals that something more significant is happening with the airway or jaw development. Left unaddressed, these issues can affect a child’s sleep quality, cognitive development, behavior, and long-term health. We take these signs seriously and work with families and specialists to intervene early when needed.

Cavity Prevention — A Conservative First Approach

When decay is detected, our instinct is always to treat as conservatively as possible. We utilize two innovative, minimally invasive treatments to address early cavities without drilling: Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a topical treatment that has been clinically shown to arrest the progression of early decay. Applied directly to the affected area, it stops the cavity from advancing and helps protect the tooth. One important thing to know: SDF causes the treated area to turn black, which may appear as a small dark spot on the tooth. While purely cosmetic, we always discuss this with families beforehand so there are no surprises. SDF typically requires reapplication every six months to maintain its effectiveness. Curodont is an exciting advancement in preventative dentistry. Using a bioactive peptide technology, Curodont works by attracting calcium and phosphate ions — the natural building blocks of enamel — directly into the early lesion. This creates a bioscaffold within the tooth that guides the body’s own remineralizationprocess, effectively healing areas of early decay from the inside out, without

drilling, staining, or discomfort. It represents a true shift in how we approach early cavities — treating them rather than simply watching and waiting. Both treatments are only effective on early, non-cavitated lesions, which is exactly why regular radiographs are such an essential part of pediatric care. Catching decay early is what opens the door to these minimally invasive options.

Sealants

We place sealants on the chewing surfaces of both adult and select primary teeth to protect the deep grooves most vulnerable to decay — a simple, highly effective preventative measure that can save a great deal of treatment down the road.

Keeping Every Tooth

Even though baby teeth are eventually lost, they play a critical role in guiding jaw development and maintaining proper spacing for the adult teeth that follow. Preserving primary teeth — even those with small cavities — is an important part of setting children up for healthy, well-aligned smiles as they grow.

When to Refer

We believe in doing what is best for every child, and sometimes that means referring to a trusted pediatric dental specialist. For cases requiring advanced treatment, sedation, or a higher level of care, we work with excellent pediatric dentists throughout the valley to ensure your child is treated safely, comfortably, and efficiently.
